Outlook 2020 is an outward-looking, non-partisan initiative that seeks to draw on the rich sources of knowledge and expertise available to the Business Council. The project consists of a four part Summit Series, building on the themes and topics raised in a series of 28 research papers commissioned by the Business Council over the past year. The papers, which cover almost every aspect of the provincial economy and highlight a handful of key cross-cutting issues and themes, are freely available on the Business Council's website.

The mission of the Business Council of British Columbia - an association representing approximately 260 large and medium-sized enterprises engaged in business across all major sectors of BC's economy - is to build a competitive and growing economy that provides opportunities for all who invest, work, and live in the province.

Much excitement is being generated across the province as the Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games in February 2010 approaches. The Olympics will provide an unparalleled opportunity to showcase and draw global attention to the province. But what happens when the athletes, sponsors and VIPs leave?

To help prepare British Columbians for what lies ahead, the Business Council is working to draw attention to the critical longer-term issues, launching a four-part Summit Series on the province's economic future - Outlook 2020. The purpose is to stimulate discussion and the exchange of ideas on what can be done to sustain and advance BC's economic prosperity. We anticipate that the Summits will provide a wealth of valuable information and new insights that will assist leaders in the province, and indeed the Business Council, in developing a progressive policy agenda for the coming decade.

Outlook 2020 is motivated by three principal questions:

  1. What are the key external and internal trends that will define the economic environment for BC in the next decade?
  2. How can BC as a small, open economy continue to prosper in a more competitive and increasingly knowledge-based global economy?
  3. What steps can be taken to improve upon current policies, institutions, attitudes, and practices to strengthen the foundations for prosperity in BC?
Oh behalf of the Business Council, we thank you for your interest in Outlook 2020. If you have comments on any of the papers or on the Summit Series, please feel free to send them to the Business Council at info@bcbc.com. We look forward to seeing you at the remaining Summit.
