As the Business Council of British Columbia enters our 47th year, we are excited to bring you an evening with Dominic Barton, the Global Managing Director for McKinsey & Company and University of British Columbia alumnus.

May 28th is an opportunity for us to come together as the province's business community to look at our economic realities, the challenges they present and the urgent need we have to become more competitive if we are to seize opportunities for the benefit of British Columbia.

As part of our Annual General Meeting and celebration of the province's leading businesses, the evening with Mr. Barton will begin with a brief business portion and include a reception followed by dinner, a look at the year ahead for the business community in BC and an update from our Chair, Hank Ketcham, Executive Chairman, West Fraser Timber Co.

McKinsey & Company is one of the world’s largest management consulting firms advising leading businesses, governments and institutions. In addition to their consulting practice, McKinsey also publishes a business journal and runs an economic research arm called the McKinsey Global Institute.

Dominic Barton is the global managing director of McKinsey. Raised in British Columbia, Dominic graduated from UBC and was selected a Rhodes Scholar before beginning his 25-plus year career at McKinsey. Dominic has advised clients in a range of industries—including banking, consumer goods, high tech, and industrial—but his core area of work is in financial-sector development and reform.

Dominic was previously McKinsey’s chairman in Asia from 2004–2009, based in Shanghai, and he led McKinsey's office in Korea from 2000–2004.

External leadership

Dominic is an active participant in many international fora including Davos, Le Cercle des Économistes: Les Rencontres Économiques d’Aix-en-Provence, the Asia Business Council, and the Aspen Strategy Group. He is a trustee of the Brookings Institution and is the chairman of the International Advisory Committee to the president of South Korea on National Future and Vision.

Authored works

He is also a prolific writer—authoring more than 80 articles on financial services, Asia, history, and the issues and opportunities facing global and Asian markets. He is the co-author, with Roberto Newell and Greg Wilson, of Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises (Wiley & Sons, 2002). His most recent book is China Vignettes: An Inside Look at China (Talisman, 2007).

Awards and recognition

In 2009 he was awarded the Magnolia Gold Prize by the Shanghai Government for his outstanding contributions to the city’s development. Dominic is named in the National Association of Corporate Directors' list of 100 most influential people in corporate governance and the Boardroom and Financial Centres International’s list of Top 500. Dominic was made a Rhodes Trustee in April 2010 and is an honorary fellow at Brasenose College, Oxford.
