Business Associations Jointly Seek Intervenor Status in Cowichan Court Proceedings

The Business Council of BC, Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, Richmond Chamber of Commerce and the Urban Development Institute have retained legal counsel and intend to jointly apply for intervenor status in the appeal of Cowichan Tribes v. Canada (Attorney General), 2025 BCSC 1490.

The decision to seek intervenor status reflects the significant potential impact this case holds for the economy, property rights, and business certainty.

In seeking to intervene in these proceedings, the associations believe they can provide the BC Court of Appeal with a unique perspective on the significant legal issues raised in this appeal relating to Aboriginal title claims to privately held land and the broader consequences of the BC Supreme Court’s decision beyond the immediate dispute.

Since the decision was rendered in August, the associations have been working collaboratively and individually, engaging with members, investors, and a broad range of affected stakeholders in a respectful and constructive manner.
