BCBC supports open procurement for public construction projects
The Business Council of British Columbia (BCBC) supports Bill M 233, which would help ensure construction contracts in this province are awarded on merit, not labour affiliation. Open procurement drives competition and lowers costs, both of which British Columbia urgently needs if it is going to build its way out of its current fiscal challenges.
With a $13.3 billion deficit, recent credit rating downgrades, and $37.7 billion in planned capital construction over the next three years, the province cannot afford policies that limit competition or increase costs. New pressures, including the expanded PST on architectural, engineering, and geoscience services, only add to the challenge.
We encourage the government to pass Bill M 233 and ensure procurement policies are open, fair and focused on getting the best value for taxpayers.
